Yu-Gi-Oh! Sleeves and Card Sizes
Yu-Gi-Oh! cards are smaller than most other trading cards, and that catches new collectors out: the sleeves sold for Magic or Pokémon do not fit them properly. This guide covers the actual card dimensions, which sleeves to buy, and how to layer protection from a single sleeve up to a storage box.
What size are Yu-Gi-Oh! cards
Yu-Gi-Oh! cards measure 59 by 86 mm, noticeably smaller than the 63 by 88 mm standard used by Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, and Lorcana. This size is usually sold as "small" or "Japanese" size. It is the single most important thing to know before buying accessories for the game.
Which sleeves fit
Buy small or Japanese-size sleeves, which have an inner opening around 62 by 89 mm. Standard-size sleeves technically hold a Yu-Gi-Oh! card, but the card swims in them: it slides around, corners catch, and the loose fit gives less protection in play. Sleeves marketed for Yu-Gi-Oh! are the right class by definition.
Sleeve types and trade-offs
- Penny sleeves: thin, clear, and cheap. Most penny sleeves are standard size, so they fit a Yu-Gi-Oh! card loosely; that is fine for storage and shipping, less good for play.
- Premium or deck sleeves in small size: thicker, more durable, and usually opaque-backed. Built for repeated shuffling; this is what tournament players use.
- Matte vs gloss: matte sleeves reduce glare and shuffle more smoothly, gloss sleeves slide more freely but reflect more light. Neither is objectively better.
From sleeve to box: layering protection
- Sleeve: the baseline layer for almost any card you handle or keep. Small size for play; a loose penny sleeve is acceptable for storage.
- Toploader: the common 3 by 4 inch toploader holds a Yu-Gi-Oh! card with room to spare; sleeve the card first so it does not slide against the hard plastic.
- Binder: a standard 9-pocket binder works, and the smaller cards sit comfortably in the pockets; side-loading pockets keep them from sliding out.
- Storage box: for bulk and long-term storage, an acid-free box keeps sleeved cards upright, sorted, and out of the light.
You do not need every layer for every card. Bulk commons can live unsleeved in a box, a tournament deck belongs in small-size premium sleeves, and a valuable card is worth a sleeve plus a toploader and a spot away from sunlight.
